Hey guys, I’m looking to set up a small nas and network switch. I’d like it to be rack mounted but I know that’s going to increase the price and cause me to look for sas drives instead of the cheaper data drives. Does anyone have any recommendations on a cheap rack build or should I just go with mini towers and call it a day? I’m also not too sure on what Linux is I should be looking into to run all of this. I’m looking for about 24-30 tb of storage and a 10 port switch.
Do you have a budget in mind?
Rosewill RSV-L4000 or similar will do work.
If you have an HBA, you can use SAS or SATA with these hot swap bays.
You can also get used enterprise drives for dirt cheap.
As relates to OS, what do you want the machine to do besides be a NAS?
I’m looking at no more than 1k for my budget, as for the nas mainly just mass media storage and something that I can play around with to learn a bit more about servers in general.
I would say you’ll have to make some concessions for rack equipment at that budget.
If you shop around you might be able to pick up a rack for free, otherwise this is my recommendation to start
this is what I’m using for a switch currently
Thats half your budget before getting to the server.
For a long time, I actually ran a single rosewill chassis on a wire shelf.
Something like this will hold a lot of weight just fine. Sometimes theres deals on craigslist or the like for a free rack, but those are usually full height and pretty tough to deal with.
Are you looking to build this out yourself or did you want something off the shelf?
